Today, in a special press event, Latvia’s inclusion in the Monster Energy FIA World Rallycross Championship was announced, with the event set to take place in Biķernieki Complex Sports Base in Rīga. Event organizers RA Events and World RX organizers IMG have signed a contract stating that Latvia will host a race from 2016 to 2018. This is possible thanks to the support of Latvian Government and a partner CSDD (Road Traffic Safety Directorate of the Ministry of Transport).
We would like to remind that the International Automobile Federation (FIA) made an important decision before the 2014 rallycross season, regarding the position of the discipline in the motorsports hierarchy – it was decided that the event will hold a World championship status. Before then, the top title was European champion, but, starting with 2014, it is possible to become World champion in the most powerful Supercar class. Along with rallycross, the only other disciplines that crown a World champion are Formula 1, World Rally Championship, World Touring Car Championship and World Endurance Championship. These changes also meant that the races could take place outside of Europe, with two of the 13 events taking place in Canada and Argentina.
